The whole process was a new sense of excitement along with anxiety, but the results were fruitful. Now, cutting your own hair may seem like a brave idea, but I promise you, with just some proper guidance its really an easy task to learn. Let me share my journey with you.
Preparing Your Haircut Space to Cut Your Own Hair
Cutting your hair at home needs a little preparation. First, you need good scissors . Hair-cutting scissors work best. They are sharper and give a cleaner cut . You’ll also need a comb, hair clips, and a mirror . If possible, use a second mirror to see the back of your head. A spray bottle filled with water helps keep your hair damp . This makes it easier to cut.
Choose a place with good lighting . Natural light is the best. Lay down an old sheet or towel to catch the hair. This makes cleanup easier.
Understanding Your Hair Type
Hair type affects how you should cut it. Straight hair shows every cut. Curly hair hides mistakes better but can be tricky. Wavy hair is in between. Knowing your hair type helps you plan. I have wavy hair. It frizzes easily, so I cut it when it’s damp but not soaked.
Washing and Detangling Your Hair
Start with clean hair. Shampoo and condition it as usual. Dry it until it’s damp. Hair stretches when wet. This can make it hard to see the actual length. Comb out all the tangles. Smooth, detangled hair is easier to cut evenly.
Sectioning Them to Cut Your Own Hair
Divide your hair into sections. This makes it easier to cut your own hair. Use clips to hold each section. Start by parting your hair down the middle. Then divide each half into smaller sections. I find it helpful to clip the top sections first. This keeps them out of the way while cutting the bottom sections.
Trimming Split Ends
Split ends make hair look unhealthy. Trimming them keeps your hair looking fresh. Hold a small section of hair between your fingers. Slide your fingers down until you see the split ends. Use your scissors to trim them off. Repeat this for all sections. I do this every few months. It keeps my hair looking good.
Cutting Your Bangs
Bangs need careful cutting. Comb them forward and decide on the length. I like mine just above my eyebrows. Hold the scissors vertically and make small cuts. This helps avoid a blunt, uneven line. Remember, you can always cut more if needed. It’s better to start with a longer length.
Layering Your Hair
Layers add volume and movement. Divide your hair into sections again. Hold a section at a 90-degree angle from your head. Cut the ends straight across. Move to the next section and repeat. Layers take practice. Don’t be afraid to start with longer layers and adjust. When I first tried layers, I watched a lot of tutorials. It helped build my confidence.
Shaping the Back
The back is the hardest part to cut your own hair. Use two mirrors to see better. You can also ask a friend to help. Pull a section of hair straight back. Trim it to the desired length. Continue with small sections. I find it helpful to check the length often. This helps keep it even.
